Testosterone and exercise-induced adult hippocampal neurogenesis
Introduction Although the exact mechanisms are unknown, previous studies have reported that exercise enhances adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN), and IGF-I and BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) may be responsible for the phenomenon. Gonadal hormones are also being implicated in the modulation of AHN. Currently, we found that even mild exercise activates hippocampal nuerons and their BDNF inductions. Thus it is of interest to test the hypothesis that mild exercise enhances AHN in the dentate gyrus through the testosterone effects on brain.
