Development of Yeast Cell-surface Display Technology and Its Application in Biofuels Production
Yeast cell-surface display is the most widely studied and advanced surface displaying system with safety and high efficiency for displaying proteins especially for eukaryotic proteins. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is the first host of yeast cells for surface display using anchor or flocculation domain such as α-agglutinin or Flo1p. Recently, other yeast cell-surface display systems, including Pichia pastoris, Yarrowia lipolytica, and Sake yeast, have also been employed. The heterologous protein displayed on yeast cells can be used as biocatalysts, which shows more stable enzymatic properties and catalytic ability than free enzyme. Recent development in yeast cell-surface display systems focus on the display of cellulase or lipase for the production of biofuels such as bioethanol or biodiesel from biomass resources. This review describes the development of yeast cell-surface display system and its application as whole-cell biocatalyst in biofuels production.
