Effects of Laccase on the Detoxification of Steam-exploded Corn Stover Prehydrolyzate and Ethanol Fermentation by Picchia stipitis CBS 5776
Fermentation of lignocellulosic prehydrolyzate to ethanol is made difficult by the presence of inhibitory compounds in the prehydrolyzate, such as organic acids, furans, and phenolic compounds. Detoxification is one of solutions to reduce the amount of inhibitors for better fermentability. Here we present a bioligical enzyme method, laccase, to specifically detoxify lignin degraded products in the prehydrolyzate. The optimal conditions of detoxification were that laccase dosage of 300 IU was added to 100 ml steam-exploded corn stover prehydrolyzate at pH 5.5 and 30 ℃ for 8 h. Five of Six main phenolic compounds could be completely removed except for 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde. Compared with prehydrolyzate without detoxification by laccase, the fermentability of the detoxified prehydrolyzate with the yeast Pichia stipitis CBS 5776 was particially improved. The fermentation time of its highest yield of ethanol was decreased by 6 h from 36 h to 30 h.
