Effect of Additive on Green Liquor Pretreatment of Loblolly Pine for Enzymatic Hydrolysis
In order to improve the polysaccharide retention during GL pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency, green liquor pretreatment was performed at higher green liquor sulfidity, with the addition of sodium polysulfide or with the addition of sodium borohydride. The results indicated that all these three measures are effective in increasing yield and polysaccharide retention and thereby increase the enzymatic conversion for the pretreated pulps. These measures can be combined with oxygen delignification and/or mechanical refining to further improve the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency. Up to 80% of the polysaccharides in wood can be converted to fermentable sugars.
