Atomization and Drying Characteristics of Re-dispersible Glue Emulsion Using a Spinning Disk Atomizer
The powder of redispersible glue emulsion is widely used in building materials. Because the emulsion is very viscous and heat-sensitive, it is always a problem during its atomization and drying. In this paper, a spinning disk atomizer is used to make the fine droplets of this emulsion. Such a model atomizer is also used to spray dry a re-dispersible glue emulsion on an industrial scale operation producing 2,000T/Y. The maximum spray capacity of such an atomizer is 2,000kg/h. The disk tested has a diameter of 180mm and has 24 channels. The droplet size distribution of emulsion sprays produced by the spinning disk atomizer is obtained by a laser analyzer. The effects of the disk rpm on water droplet size distribution were investigated, as well. The rpm of the disk was varied from 16,000rpm to 10,000rpm using a frequency-inverter. In order to investigate the change of droplet size to particle size from the spray dryer, the particle size distribution produced in an industrial spray dryer is measured, too. The results show that the mean size of droplets was reduced from 92 μm in droplets to 72μm in particle form. It was also observed that the maximum particle size was larger than that of droplets due to droplet and particle agglomeration taking place within the spray drying chamber.
