Application of Biorefinery in Pulp and Paper Industry and Its Future Development
The concept of wood-based biorefinery or integrated forest biorefinery (IFBR) factory is introduced. The main principle of the repurposing of a Kraft pulp and paper mill into a IFBR factory is reviewed. Three IFBR factory production models are: 1) the near-neutral hemicellulose pre-extraction and pulping process; 2) the acid pre-hydrolysis and pulping process; 3) the alkali pretreatment and cellulose fermentation process. The IFBR factory model that preserves pulp production capacity shall be a good alternative choice in near future, and that can bring additional economical income for typical Kraft paper mill. The pre-extraction liquor of wood chips before cooking can be used to produce ethanol, acetic acid and other chemicals. The pre-extracted wood chips are continuously transported into the next production unit to produce pulp and paper products. No adverse effects of the pretreatment on strength and optical properties of the pulp are observed. The rate of return on investment of the repurposing of a Kraft mill into IFBR factory varies between 7.1% and 13.0% depending upon the plant size. The straw-based biorefinery may be a good alternative choice for China straw pulp mills.
