Cationic Polymerization of α-Pinene with Keggin Silicotungstic Acid Catalyst
Heteropolyacids (HPAs) have many advantages such as high catalytic activity, high thermal and oxidative stability, a non-corrosive nature and non-polluting of its surroundings. Using HPAs as acid catalysts have been paid more and more attention in organic synthesis and the petrochemical industry. Silicotungstic acid catalysts were explored for α-pinene cationic polymerization. The structure of polymers and the catalysts was characterized by FT-IR or GPC. The effect of reaction temperature, reaction time, the dosage of catalysts and the types of solvents on the catalytic performance was investigated, too. Under optimum reaction conditions, the overall α-pinene conversion was up to 90.87%, and the polymer product yield was 62.46%.
