Methoxylation of α-pinene Catalyzed by Phosphomolybdic Acid
The methoxylation of α-pinene catalyzed by phosphomolybdic acid (PMA)has been investigated. It was found that solvent could affect the distribution of isomerization products. Higher yield for α-terpinene has been achieved in ethyl acetate. The system has been applied for synthesizing α-terpinyl methyl ether (TME). The optimum conditions were: the amount of PMA is 2% (based on the mass of α-pinene); the molar ratio for methanol and α-pinene was 2:1; the reaction was kept at 70 ℃ for 3 h. The yield for TME is 39.33%.
