Nanocrystalline Cellulose Prepared from Softwood Sulfate Pulp via Ultrasonic Assisted Acid Hydrolysis Method

Nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) has attracted widely interest due to the advantages of abundant, renewable, biodegradable and especially excellent mechanical properties. In the present work, nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) was prepared from softwood kraft pulp (SKP) through a novel method of ultrasonic assisted acid hydrolysis approach. Morphology and structure of the prepared NCC was characterized by means of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Thermal behavior was measured by Thermo gravimetric Analysis (TGA). The results revealed that the prepared NCC had rod shaped structure, with the diameter of 10-20 nm and length 100-200 nm, respectively. Compared with SKP, NCC exhibited two pyrolysis peaks within 200 -300 ℃. Due to the nano -size and higher number of free end chains, NCC decomposed at lower temperature and resulted higher char yield (25%). XRD results revealed that the crystallinity of NCC was improved from 73% (SKP) to 81%. NCC had the similar functional groups with that of the SKP, but higher amount of surface hydroxyl.
