Synthesis and Application of Modified Epoxy Acrylic Resin in Papermaking

In this paper, an epoxy acrylic resin (EA) was synthesized by reacting biphenyl A epoxy resin with acrylic acid at first, and then a water-soluble epoxy acrylic resin (EB) was made through the reaction of EA with maleic anhydride acid. Thereafter, EB was added into pulp for improving paper wet strength. When using biphenyl A epoxy resin E51, the synthesis of EA was processed at 95 ℃ by adding 1% N,N-dimethylethanolamine as a catalyst and 0.5% polymerization inhibitor. The best modification conditions were selected as adding epoxy acrylic resin and maleic anhydride at the ratio of 1:1, at reaction temperature 80 ℃ for 1 h. Results showed that UV curing had higher paper wet strength improvement efficiency than high temperature curing. When papersheets were made under the condition of pH 7-8, by adding with 3% of the modified EA and 0.4% cationic polyacrylamide as retention aid, paper wet strength retention rate could reach 20% after cured by UV radiation.
