Effect of Nanocrystalline Cellulose on the Hydrophilic Property of Polysulfone Membrane
Nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) was prepared from cellulose pulp by acid-catalyzed hydrolysis and high pressure homogenization so as to improve hydrophilic property of polysulfone (PS) membrane. The casting solution of a PS/NCC blend was obtained by adding NCC to a polysulfone membrane solution and the composite membrane was prepared by phase-inversion method. In order to judge of the composite membrane with different NCC contents, the contact angle was tested with a contact-angle-testing instrument. In addition, the flux of pure water and a bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution was examined. All the results of the evaluations indicated that the hydrophilic properties of PS membrane had greatly enhanced. Moreover, with the help of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the blend membrane and NCC were observed to research on their porous structures and the dimensions of the nanofibers.
