Deposition of Silver Nanoparticles on Cellulosic Fibers

The deposition of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) on cellulose acetate (CA), cellulose and carboxymethylated cellulose (CMC) electrospun fibers at various pH conditions is reported. In addition, the stabilizing role of of carboxymetyl groups on the conformal deposition of Ag NPs over cellulosic fibers is also elucidated. Partially carboxymethylated cellulose fibers were prepared through judicious anionization of deacetylated cellulose acetate fibers. Silver nanoparticles were chemically reduced from silver nitrate using sodium borohydride and further stabilized using citrate. These Ag NP were directly deposited onto CA, cellulose and CMC electrospun fibers at pH conditions ranging from 2.5 to 9.0. The resulting Ag/fiber composites were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results revealed that the amount of Ag agglomerates and NPs deposited on CMC fiber was higher than that on the cellulose fibers at the similar pH conditions in the range of pH from 2.5 to 9.0, and barely any Ag agglomerates or NPs were observed in the case of CA fiber. This work highlighted the importance of surface charge of substrates and the pH of medium on the deposition of NPs on substrates and revealed the mechanism of dispersion and agglomeration of NPs through electrostatic interactions between the charged groups on substrates and charged groups on NPs at different pH conditions.
