Preparation and Antimicrobial Activities of Phenethyl Isothiocyanate from Horseradish

Horseradish powder was hydrolyzed,extracted by petroleum ether and isolated by silica gel column, Phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC) was obtained finally and was identified by IR, MS, 1H NMR and 13C NMR. The inhibitory activity of PEITC against Gibberella zeae, Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri, Cytospora sp and Phytophthora capsisi was investigated. The results showed that PEITC had good antimicrobial activity, the inhibition effects (EC50) against Gibberella zeae, Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri, Cytospora sp and Phytophthora capsisi were 3.69, 0.73, 1.20 and 13.92 μg.mL-1, respectively.
