NUMERICAL STUDY ON CONVECTIVE HEAT TRANSFER OF PULSED TURBULENT IMPINGING JET

Pulsed impinging jets have received increasing interests for their potential in heat and mass transfer enhancement. To further understand the heat and mass transfer properties in pulsed impinging jets, a numerical investigation has been performed on a two dimensional pulsed turbulent impinging jet with sinusoidal and intermittent pulsations to examine the effect of temperature-dependent thermophysical properties along with pulsation of the jet on the local Nusselt number distribution on the target surface. The numerical results indicate no obvious heat transfer enhancement by single sinusoidal pulsation, while significant heat transfer enhancement due to intermittent pulsation of the jet flow can be found over a wide range of conditions. Examination of the flow and thermal fields shows that the instantaneous heat transfer rate on the target surface is highly dependent on the hydrodynamic and thermal boundary layer development with time.
