Some thermal properties of solid-solutions Zintl phase

One class of materials that should be studied for thermoelectric is Zintl Phases. A Zintl phase is like a salt where there is essentially complete electron transfer between cation &anion. But, unlike normal table salt, the cations do not supply enough electrons to satisfy the valence needs of the anions. So covalent bonds are formed creating a variety of different polyanionic unit structures. This mixture of covalent and ionic bonding allows for better electrical conduction over purely ionic salts, while the complex structure scatters phonons minimizing the thermal conductivity./1-3/.
