PROCESSING OF BIOMORPHIC POROUS CERAMICS WITH DESIGNED MICROSTRUCTURE BY CHEMICAL VAPOR INFILTRATION AND REACTION TECHNIQUE

Biomorphic porous SiC based ceramics derived from paper preforms were processed by chemical vapour infiltration and reaction (CVI-R) technique. The possibility to prepare structures with complex geometry, which is not possible with the conventional ceramic technologies, is the main advantage of paper derived ceramics. Their composition as well as phase structure and porosity can be designed varying the precursor system and the process conditions. These materials combine low weight with high shape and mechanical stability as well as good thermo-physical characteristics e.g. oxidation resistance and thermal conductivity. They are promising candidates for high temperature applications such as catalyst support, components for pore burner or filter for molten metals.
