DEVELOPLEMENT OF THE THERMAL DIFFUSIVITY STANDARD IN JAPAN USING THE LASER FLAH METHOD
The flash method is one of the most popular methods to measure thermal diffusivity. The National Metrology Institute of Japan (NMIJ) in AIST has been studying the laser flash method in order to establish the SI traceable thermal diffusivity standard. We have developed key technologies to reduce uncertainty in laser flash measurements. We have established the SI traceable thermal diffusivity measurement procedure and started to a calibration service with the quality system along to ISO 17025. And we proposed and verified the procedure to obtain the inherent thermal diffusivity independent measurement conditions. We have been also investigating the carbon materials as a reference material for the laser flash instruments. The carbon materials, for example isotropic graphite and glass-like carbon, are convenient to measure thermal diffusivity without black coatings using the laser flash instruments because they have absorption and non-transparency of the near-infrared light. We investigated homogeneity and stability on some carbon materials. Then we establish a reference material for the laser flash method.
