SURFACE TEMPERATURE MEASUREENT WITH SURFACE ACOUSTIC WAVE AT HIGH TEMPERATURES

It is important to evaluate the emissivity of heat shields in design of reentry vehicles. In order to determine the emissivity of the heat-resistant materials, a precise measurement of surface temperature is needed. Because of the high temperature at around 2000 K, the temperature measurement should be executed without contact to samples in order to avoid heat loss. For this reason, the new method using the surface acoustic wave (SAW) is proposed. It is the method to determine the temperature by measuring the phase velocity of SAW on the samples. The measurement system is constructed and a preliminary measurement is conducted. As a result of preliminary study, the possibility of temperature measurement with high frequency component of the SAW is confirmed.
