SIMULATING THE THERMAL BEHAVIOUR OF THE Na2CO3-Li2CO3 MELT WITH ANDWITHOUT CARBON. COMPUTER EXPERIMENT

Fused carbonates are used in numerous physical, chemical, and electrochemical processes. They include fused electrolytes of high-temperature combustion cells, mediums for processes involved in recycling of man-caused materials, metallurgical processes, desulphurization of gases, and gasification of coals. Molten carbonates Na2CO3+Li2CO3 can be used as an active ionic medium. However, the thermal behavior of this system has been poorly understood. Thermodynamic simulation is used to study equilibrium in carbonate systems. An ASTRA-4 program package is used for calculation of equilibrium states in multi-element heterophase systems. Equilibrium compositions of gas and salt phases are calculated at different temperatures in the initial argon atmosphere. Basic trends of the variation in the composition of the melt and the gas phase above the melt in the presence of carbon have been determined. The results characterizing the stability of carbonate components in the melt have been analyzed. A comparison of the melt systems showed their reduction and formation of vapors of metals and their oxides when carbon is added. The mass of the melt decreases. An addition of excess carbon led to a significant loss of the melt. The concentration of the oxides increased in the residual melt. These factors should be taken into account in technological operations.
