Temperature dependence of the collective and self-diffusion coefficients of nanoparticles in aqueous solutions

The self-diffusion coefficient (Ds) of polystyrene latex nanoparticles in aqueous solutions has been determined as a function of temperature using dynamic light scattering (DLS). Dynamic light scattering is a very useful technique for investigating the dynamic motion of particles in a solution, and has been widely used in various academic and industrial fields. However, when using this technique, one needs to pay careful attention to interaction effects (i.e., particle-particle and particle solvent interactions) on the diffusion coefficient of the particles in solution. If not, then incorrect information can be obtained on the self-diffusion coefficients of nanoparticles. We present how to measure precise selfdiffusion coefficients of nanoparticles in solution as a function of temperature using DLS measurements.
