GLASS TRANSITION DETERMINATION BY DIFFERENT THERMAL METHODS OF MEASUREMENT

Glass transition (Tg) an intrinsic material property is a dynamic phenomenon occurring between two different state of matter (liquid and glass). The observed Tg can vary depending upon the property chosen, technique of measurement and experimental parameters. Nevertheless values of Tg obtained by different numerical results for a given material agree within a few degrees. Well established Thermal Analysis (TA) techniques-Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), Thermo Mechanical Analyser (TMA) and Dynamic Mechanical Analyser (DMA) are used to estimate Tg. The Shape Memory Polymer (SMP), is planned for use in the development of actuators and mechanisms for small satellites of Indian space program. The Measured Tg of this typical SMP by DSC is around 690C; by TMA standard expansion probe is around 87℃; by macro expansion probe is around 89℃ and by DMA is around 82℃.
