VISCOSITIES OF MOLTEN Cu–X (X = Al, Ni) SYSTEMS

The viscosities of molten Cu-X alloys (X=Al, Ni) were measured by an oscillating cup viscometer in order to investigate the effect of alloying element to the viscos-ity of molten copper-based alloy in this study. Composi-tions of Cu-Al and Cu-Ni alloys measured were Cu-12.5, 25.0, 37.5, 50.0, 62.5, 75.0, 87.5 and 100 at% Al, and Cu-16.7, 33.0, 50.0, 66.0 and 83.3 at% Ni, respectively. The viscosity measurements were carried out up to about 1873 K. The crucible used was made of high-purity alu-mina. The atmosphere was helium and zirconium oxygen getter was placed under the crucible containing sample melts. The viscosities of all the alloys decreased with in-creasing temperature and showed very good Arrhenian linearity. However, the composition dependencies of vis-cosity of two alloy systems showed different behaviors. Addition of small amount of aluminum in copper in-creased the viscosity of melt, and molten Cu-25%Al al-loy showed a maximum viscosity. The viscosity of Cu-Al alloy monotonically decreased with further addition of aluminum. On the other hand, the viscosity of Cu-Ni alloy monotonically increased with increasing nickel content over entire compositions.
