Activity of Plantago lanceolata Extracts Against Methecillin Resistance Staphylococcus aureus In Vitro and In Vivo
Staphylococcus aureus isolated from clinical sources in Erbil city hospitals. These isolates were characterized culturally, microscopically and biochemicaly including API staph system. All isolates were tested for their resistant to seven antibiotics, with the resistance of seven isolates to all tested antibiotics. All isolates appeared to be methecillin resistance.Transformation experiment revealed that the resistant genes of all tested antibiotics for S.aureus S45 isolate are encoded by plasmid DNA.The Minimum Inhibition Concentration (MIC) of Plantago lanceolata ethanol and aqueous extracts were 900 μg/ml and 1200 μg/ml,respectively.Sub-MIC of both extracts were proved to be the most powerful as a curing agent,to cure plasmids from plasmid bearing isolates, and reduced 72-100% and 64-100% resistance of S.aureus S45 isolate to antibiotics used when ethanol and aqueous extract treated, respectively. Moreover, the Sub-MIC of extracts revealed a superior effect on the clearance of S.aureus in blood of infected mice. The total WBC count decreased in infected mice treated with Sub-MIC of P.lanceolata ethanolic extract from 9.7 x103 cells/μl to 4.2x103 cells/μl,compared with infected untreated mice with the total WBC was 18.7x103 cells/μl.
