Selection of Thixotropic Additives for Optimal Bonding Paste Performance
This study compares the rheological performance of calcium carbonates and fumed silicas in epoxy resins. Uncoated calcium carbonate provides little thickening and imparts no sag resistance to epoxy resin. Stearic acid coated calcium carbonate imparts shear thinning, moderate thickening but little sag resistance to epoxy resins. Concentrations above 7 weight percent of untreated fumed silica in epoxy resin cause shear thickening which is not desirable for pumping or application. Polydimethylsiloxane treated fumed silica provides the sag resistance, shear thinning behavior, and viscosity stability in epoxy resin required for bonding pastes.
