China WindPower Conference 2010 – Paper Submission “Ricardo MultiLife Bearing System - Final Design and Test Programme

Reliability in wind engineering covers all the key electro-mechanical systems from system modelling and integration through to the drivetrain as well as control, electronic and monitoring systems, testing, manufacturing and operation/warranty periods. Understanding the full product development life-cycle processes, technologies and areas of innovation is critical to reducing the Cost of Energy of Wind power, particularly offshore. Ricardo is a leading provider of technology and product innovation to the automotive, transport and energy industries. This paper presents some of the innovations and development areas where Ricardo’s substantial experience from other industries can yield improvements to reliability and cost-effectiveness of Wind Energy. Ricardo presented a paper at the EWEC 2010 conference that outlined a Ricardo innovation called MultiLife to increase bearing life fivefold through a novel design to share load around a roller-bearing inner race. This concept is currently being prototyped and this paper provides an update on this exciting project.
