Comparison of Rill Erosion on Purple Soil and Dry-hot Soil

Rill erosion is the initial stage that erosion form changing from sheet erosion to gully erosion, and has an important contribution to soil loss of watersheds. In heavy soil loss areas, rill erosion is often serious. Therefore, researches focused on rill erosion in serious soil loss area will be an important guiding role to prevent soil loss. In China, wide researches have been done in the Loess Plateau, but little information about rill erosion can be found in Upper Yangtze River basin where being considered as another key area for soil conservation at present. This study focused on two typical soils in this area which are prone to erosion. By using runoff scoring experiments, rill erosion on purple soil and dry-hot soil were compared. The results showed: The rill erosion rate of dry-hot soil was greater than that of purple soil; the average rill erosion rate of dry-hot soil was 14.3 times of purple soil, and the maximum difference was 73 times. By using the rill erosion model in WEPP, rill erodiblility of purple soil was determined as 0.002s/m, the critical sheer was 5.25 Pa, and rill erodiblility of dry-hot soil was of 0.0061 s/m, the critical sheer was 10.8 Pa.
