Review of desertification assessment in China

Desertification, as a global environmental problem, should be assessed accurately, comprehensively and timely for efficient control measures adopted. China is one of the most seriously affected countries suffering from severe desertification in the world. Research achievements about desertification assessment indicator system, methods and benchmark in past 30 years in China were comprehensively summarized in this paper, and it points out that recent studies were mainly focused on assessment indicator system which based on the principles of landscape ecology and remote sensing technology. However, there are still many problems to be solved, such as indefinite selection criteria of indicators, subjective grade threshold and lack of credibility on assessment results and so on. After reviewing advantages and weaknesses of assessment models which include Euclidean distance method and desertification indicator, etc., the author indicates that the desertification assessment methods have gradually presented the features of multi-scale, quantitative and convenient in recent years while the reliability still needs to be verified. Moreover, main viewpoints of desertification benchmark were introduced and the goal of desertification control was proposed to be selected as a benchmark.
