Evaluating Culturable Wasteland Reclamation Based on Land Eco-security and Economic Feasibility in Beijing
To reach the goal of quantity dynamic balance of farmland, culturable wasteland reclamation (CWR) has been drawing increasing attention for complementing farmland against the encroachment by urban sprawl. This paper took Beijing as a case, using ecological and economic principles and theories to validate the feasibility of CWR in Beijing. Firstly, all the culturable wasteland that could be reclaimed for agricultural use was identified from the natural suitability (NS) perspective. Then further selection based on the lands identified was performed by overlaying the results of land eco-security (LES) analysis of Beijing. Finally, the economic feasibility (EF) of CWR in Beijing was analyzed. And the results indicate that. there are 11675.25 ha culturable wasteland that could be reclaimed as farmland. from the NS perspective only. And it reduced to 8355.97 ha, after LES constraints were added. However. from the perspective of EF. it can be known that CWR is an unfeasible way for farmland dynamic balance in Beijing. So, more attention should be paid to land consolidation to increase productivity and intensive agriculture of farmland status quo. This research paper put LES and EF into land reclamations, which prompt the improvement of evaluation system of land reclamation under constrained conditions without ecology deterioration and land degradation.
