Land salinization and its distribution in Qaidam Basin

Land salinization which is a main kind of land degradation in China has become one of the largest obstacles to ecological protection and economical development of Qaidam Basin. This paper analyzed the area of land salinization and its distribution in Qaidam based on 1 to 100000 landuse attributes of China in 2000. The soil salt content and its distribution were also evaluated by field survey in 2008. The results showed that the area of saline land in Qaidam was about 1.98x104 km2, and was almost distributed on the center of the basin. Divided into administrative regions, Wulan had 859.4 km2, Golmud had 8.16x103 km2, Delingha had 8.64x103 km2 and Dulan had 2.1Ox103 km2. Saline land was mainly distributed under the altitude of 2800m. Compared to landuse attributes in 1991, the area of saline land had an obvious trend of decrease. As to salt content, surface layer was the highest, which could be 50.3%, and about 21% for average. Soil salt content dropped quickly when the depth increased. However, when the depth reached about Im, salt content mostly stabled under l%. Variation of soil salt content was mainly related to ground water table and slope. Of course, climate change also had some influences.
