Effect of Land Use and Rainfall Factors on Soil and Water Loss in Purple Soil Region

This study was carried out in Hemingguan small watershed and 3 experiment plots which were divided into 2 periods(from 1983 to 1986 and from 1989 to 2000) in hilly region of the central Sichuan, and characteristics of soil and water loss of different land use, response of runoff and erosion on rainfall factors and benefits of comprehensive control measures m small watershed were analysed. The results show, in first period runoff depth in different rainfall intensities in turn was wasteland > grassland>slopeland, but erosion modulus in turn was slopeland>wasteland>grassland. In second period runoff depth in turn was terrace land>grassland>forestry, and erosion modulus followed terrace land > grassland > forestry. Correlation degree between runoff. erosion and rainfall factors in wasteland. low covered grassland and slopeland was much better, which show that soil erosion was mainly influenced by rainfall factors. Correlation coefficient between rainfall and erosion in forestry, high covered grassland and terrace land was much minor, it may be that vegetative cover and soil characteristic had a important role on retarding runoff and erosion processes, which show land use or vegetative cover has obvious effect on soil and water loss. Due to the action of comprehensive control measures of soil and water conservation, many years average runoff amount from 1990 to 2004 had reduced 30.67% than that from 1985 to 1989, average sediment transportation had reduced 91.2g% and average sediment content had reduce 76.05%.
