Methodology and Application of Degraded Riparian zone Ecological Restoration Suitability Assessment
Ecological restoration of degraded riparian zones is an essential approach to restore riparian functions and the related ecosystem functions, especially for tourism areas. However, not all degraded riparian zones are suitable for restoration. To evaluate the restoration potential level for a certain unit efficiently, ecological restoration suitability assessment theory was explained. comprehensive assessment index system and fuzzy probability assessment model were built. The proposed methodologies have been used to assess restoration suitability of degraded riparian zones of famous Yanqi river folk-custom tourism areas of Beijing, China. Modeling results concluded that the ecological restoration potential level of degraded riparian zones within the study area can be divided into 4 grades: (Ⅰ) Not suitable for ecological restoration; (Ⅱ) Low suitability for ecological restoration; (Ⅲ) Suitable for ecological restoration; (Ⅳ) Very suitable for ecological restoration efforts. Decision Support System of Riparian zone (DSSR) was also designed by using Visual Basic language to help show the distributing of different ecological restoration suitability grades of degraded riparian zone in study area. The result fits the field survey well and provides a scientific basis for riparian land use planning. Countermeasures for riparian zone degradation were also recommended.
