Characterization of a Novel Chemical Sand-fixin Material of Hydrophilic Polyurethane

A novel chemical sand-fixing material of hydrophilic polyurethane resin was studied in this paper, which was prepared by polymerizing excessive diphenyl-methane-diisocyanate(abbraviated as MDI) with hydrophilic polyol. The sand-fixing material was characterized by low viscosity, good permeability and short solidifying time. The structure of this sand-fixing material was characterized by termination with -NCO. It can react with water in several minutes to become a gel and a sand-fixing layer was formed when sprayed on the sand surface. Several properties relating to the sand fixation were studied systematically, including solidifying time, permeability and porosity, mechanical properties, water retention capacity and durability from UV radiation. The microstructure of the sand-fixing layer was also examined by Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM) to study the mechanism of sand fixation. The sand-fixing layer was formed by linking loose sand particles through the gel. The experimental results shows that the fixing Iayer is characterized by appropriate porosity, excellent water retention capacity, high durability from UV radiation, good mechanical properties to withstand strong wind and sand erosion. The material can supply a suitable condition for planting.
