Analysis of soil and water conservation measures on sediment yield reduction in the Xihe watershed in Loess Plateau
To study the impacts of soil and water conservation measures on the sediment yield reduction in the Xihe watershed in Tianshui, Gansu Province in the third sub-region of Loess Plateau, double accumulative curve method and empirical formula method were used for measuring average annual and monthly sediment discharge change respectively. The results showed that soil and water conservation measures in the Xihe watershed had significant effects on the annual sediment yield. Compared to 1962-1971, the annual sediment discharge was reduced by approximately 37.4% in 1972-1991 and 49.6% in 1992-2008. The effects of soil and water conservation measures on sediment discharge demonstrated seasonal fluctuations. Relative to that in 1962-1971, the reduction effects of sediment discharge in 1972-1991 and 1992-2000 were more concentrated in the period from May to October. The maximal average monthly sediment yield reduction was 63.7% in September in 1972-1991 and 77.6% in October in 1992-2000. Therefore, the substantial reduction in sediment yield was related to the wide range of conservation practices implemented after the 1970s in the Xihe watershed.
