Different Process of Gully Erosion and Predicted the Gully Growth by A Compound Index in Black Soil Region of Northeast China
Gully erosion is a senous enwronmental hazard in Chinas black soil region. All gullies in two small catchments were monitored using real-time kinematic GPS to assess its development. Three different types of gully were found in study area: floor gully, activity hillslope gully and stable hillslope gully, each type of gully had different erosion process Headcut retreat played an important role of the floor gullies development, which took high proportion of the growth in area and volume of the gullies. Acitvitiy hillslope gullies also developed obviously, but the headcut retreat was not very significant. The increasing volume was mainly due to sidewall collapse affected by freezing-thaw action and the incision of the gully bed due to runoff flow in summer. The stable hillslope gullies increased very gently, the morphological parameters did not have significant changes during last few years. Three reasons caused gullies became stable: changes of runoff path, landuse around the gully and human interupt. A compound index Rg was created as the dynamic factor of gully erosion in study area, which equal to Ln(Sf)·Ln(EI30max)·Ln(Ap). The relationship between Rg and volume increasing ratio of activity gullies was strong and significant (R2=0.97,P<0.01).
