Land Degradation and Dust Storms in Sistan Region, Iran
Dust storms are catastrophic natural disasters that beside other disasters frequently occur in arid and semiarid regions in world. Sustained drought and reduced precipitation in Sistan region, has dried the Hamoun lake and local vegetation, these significantly reduce ground cover and land degradation. These conditions have permitted the dust storms in the Sistan region. Long-term (15 years) data analyzed were obtained from synoptic stations located in the region. The result shows that after drought in the area the dust storms increased gradually. Also the maximum number of dust storm days in the survey has been recorded in 2001. It was 74 days and totally 531 hours.
