Monitoring lake surface Albedo, utilizing LANDSAT and MODIS, as indicator of the impact of climate pattern & hydrological system changes
The saline inland lake Elton is located east of the Volga River in South eastern Russia and covers an area of 155 km2. As the lake is an end-lake, therefore, hydrological system of the lake and its surrounding is extremely vulnerable to climate change and human interferences. For this study we used local climate data of 1984-2009 combined with remotely sensed surface albedo products by the LANDSAT (5TM & 7ETM+) & MODIS satellites since 1984. This study focuses on the lake degradation processes since 2005. Analysis of the regional climate pattern shows that, since 1984, air temperature had increased by 10C and annual precipitation decreased by 10%. However, analysis of the albedo of the lake surface indicates that only over the past 6 years the lake albedo increased dramatically from average autumn values (highest over the year) of 0.14 to 0.40, comparing previous years. This increase might be related to increased environmental pressure on the lake due to human interventions in the area including construction of check-dams and water harvesting systems that caused a reduced runoff inflow. The results of this study show that, under current conditions, the lake surface albedo rise is likely to continue, regardless of the regional climate pattern. The current trend implies an average increase of future annual albedo of 2% per year, with a maximum possible increase of 4%, until the steady state value of a salt crust will be reached.
