CFD Support to Liquid Metal Cooled Fast Reactors
Liquid metal cooled reactors are envisaged to play an important role in the future of nuclear energy production because of their possible efficient use of uranium and to reduce the volume and lifetime of nuclear waste. Thermal-hydraulics is recognized as a key scientific subject in the development of such reactors. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is becoming more and more integrated in the daily practice of the thermal-hydraulics researchers and designers. This paper will discuss and demonstrate various applications of CFD support to liquid metal cooled reactors including fuel bundle thermal-hydraulics, sloshing, thermal fatigue, gas entrainment, and sodium fires.
