An Analysis for the Design of Windowless Spallation System Of Accelerator Driven System
The accelerator driven system (ADS) is a new conceptual reactor for the transmutation of the high level nuclear waste (HLW). The windowless target is a design to allow the high flux proton beam to strike the liquid metal to generate neutron in the center of the core without any metal window. In the paper, a new method is provided to form free surface at the exit of windowless target by a turbine at the bottom. The volume of fluid (VOF) model is used to investigate the shape of the free surface at the different inlet flow velocity. Though the calculation was performed by water-air instead of metal in vacuum environment, it still gives out very meaningful results for the design of a windowless target with the reasonable free surface.
