Discussion of the Comparison of Fuel Assemblies And Associated Components Significant Advantage between AP1000 and AFA-3G fuel assembly

Sanmen Nuclear Power Phase I Project adopts AP1000 type nuclear electrical unit in the first 2 Units which is supplied by Westinghouse. It is developed base on AP600 type units. The fuel assembly design for Sanmen Nuclear Power Phase I Project is 17×17XL Robust type with 264fuel rods,24guid thimble tubes and 1 instrumentation tub, the fuel assembly skeleton provides the support structure for the array of fuel rods, which are in turn supported at intervals along their length by grid assemblies to maintain the lateral spacing between them. The full assembly has been designed to meet the demands of long cycle and high burnup, also it provides more design evolutions to prohibit debris from entering the fuel assembly and mitigate debris-related fuel rod fretting failures by Debris filter bottom nozzle, protect grid and oxide coating on the fuel rods. The purpose of the gray rod cluster assembly (GRCA) is to support the Mechanical Shim operating strategy for the AP1000.The GRCAs are used during normal plant operations to compensate for changes in core reactivity, replacing the need to make frequent changes to the critical boron concentration. This paper discuss AP1000 fuel assembly future in burnup and design area by comparing with AFA-3G that used in EPR which is also designed as advanced GEN III PWR nuclear power technology power plant, and explains the significant advantage and difference of both two technology.
