Thermal-Hydraulic Analysis of Mark I Containment of the Chinshan Nuclear Power Plant with GOTHIC

Chinshan Nuclear Power Plant in Taiwan is a GE-designed twin-unit BWR-4 plant with original licensed thermal power (OLTP) of 1775 MWt for each unit. The SPU (Stretched Power-Uprate) program for the Chinshan plant is being proceeded recently. The containment P/T (pressure/temperature) responses in Chinshan FSAR (Final Safety Analysis Report) were analyzed by CONTEMPT-PS more than thirty years ago. In this study, the containment thermal-hydraulic program GOTHIC is employed to re-analyze the Chinshan Mark I containment responses during LOCA (Loss of Coolant Accident). Three kinds of breaks are investigated: Recirculation Line Break (RCLB), Main Steam Line Break (MSLB), and Feedwater Line Break (FWLB). Short-term blowdown data are generated by RELAP5 transient analyses, and then provided as boundary conditions for the containment model. The calculated peak drywell pressure and temperature in the RCLB event are 32.2 psig and 282.6°F, respectively, which are close to the FSAR results (31.8 psig and 281.2 °F). However, the high-energy steam blowdown due to MSLB induces a peak drywell temperature of 312.0oF in two seconds, which was not presented in FSAR since only the RCLB event was considered. In the long-term RCLB analysis, a simplified RPV volume is used to calculate the blowdown flow rate, and only one RHR (Residual Heat Removal) heat exchanger is assumed to be operable for the suppression pool cooling. The calculated peak temperature of the suppression chamber is 199.9°F. In general, the presented containment P/T analyses are in good agreement with the FSAR results, and will be used to support the required engineering analyses associated with the SPU program.
