Advanced Designs of VVER Reactor Plant
Reactor plants VVER with water-cooled water-moderated power reactors will create the basis of nuclear power engineering in Russia in the nearest future. Federal Target Program provides for construction of nuclear power plants with VVER-1000 (Generation 3) and VVER-1200 (Generation 3+) in Russia. To improve the competitiveness of nuclear power, OKB GIDROPRESS is working at twoloop reactor units VVER-1200A and VVER-600, and also at optimization of safety systems. Two-loop arrangement allows to reduce the metal consumption and the number of main equipment items, as well as to reduce the containment size. At the same time, the work is under way on development of the innovative core, focused at usage of a closed fuel cycle, which would be more economical in use of natural uranium isotope 235U in comparison with the traditional VVER. Alongside with the designs based on traditional VVER technology, the development of the innovative design of the reactor plant with supercritical water VVER-SCP (Generation 4) is under way in OKB GIDROPRESS in collaboration with other scientific organizations.
