Dynamic Control of Nuclear Electric Propulsion System

The literature abounds in the prospective advantages of nuclear power propulsion for marine applications such as military surface ship, submarine, ice breaker, etc. In many applications it is required to perform their duty for a long periods of time on the ocean, where supply of fuel is convoluted or, most often than not, impractical. Moreover, high efficiency and compactness are the other important requirements in marine application. Therefore, an integrated nuclear electric propulsion system turns out to be a best solution to meeting all these requirements. This paper presents dynamic modeling and control of nuclear electric propulsion for naval application. A High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) motor is chosen as the propulsion motor, whereby a great deal of costs can be recouped. The motor is driven by a natural commutation power electronics converter motor drive system.
