Adsorption and Oxidation of Gas-Phase Elemental Mercury over a V2O5/AC Catalyst

Adsorption and oxidation of gas-phase elemental mercury (Hg0) over V2O5/AC and AC were studied under N2 atmosphere. The influences of V2O5 loading, temperature and Hg0 concentration on Hg0 capture were investigated. The results indicate that the capability of V2O5/AC for Hg0 capture was much higher than that of AC,indicating the crucial role of V2O5.The role of V2O5 was to oxidize Hg0 to Hg2+.X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis confirmed the formation of HgO on the surface of V2O5/AC.The amount of Hg0 captured increased with an increase of the V2O5 loading and the inlet Hg0 concentration. The Hg0 capture capability of V2O5/AC decreased as the temperature increased from 120 to 180 oC
