Emissions of Particulates and Trace Elements from Coal Gasification Process
Some of trace metal compounds in coal are easy to emit to syn-gas from coal gasification process in gaseous phase and condensed fine particulates.Impurities in syn-gas result in corrosion and/or degradation of electrode materials in fuel cell,if coal gasification process was applied to IGFC (Integrated Gasification Fuel Cell).Then,to realize the coal gasification process combined with fuel cell,its extremely important to control these emission behaviors of hazardous trace elements in gasification processes.In this study,particulates in coal gasification gas were sampled and analyzed in detail for their particle size distributions and elemental compositions.A drop tube type furnace was utilized for coal gasification experiment.Pb and Se were evaluated in their distribution behaviors to particulates.Pb is one of most typical volatile heavy metals,and Se is know as a corrosive substance for SOFC.Thermal equilibrium calculation was also conducted to specify chemical forms of Pb and Se during their emissions.As a result,particulates entrained by syn-gas from coal gasification process were confirmed to have bimodal peaks in their particle size distribution.Larger peak in supermicron range consist of ash with unburnt carbon,while smaller peak in submicron range consist of soot with mineral deposits.Se and Pb were found to act together during coal gasification process.In addition,almost all of them were vaporized in the reactor and deposited on soot particulates in submicron range during gas cooling process
