Imbibition of CO2 by Coal
Injecting CO2 into un-minable coalbed and enhance coalbed methane recovery (CO2-ECBM) is one of the promising technologies for reducing CO2 emission.In order to accurately predict the CO2 storage capacity in coal seam and understand the adsorption (imbibition) of CO2 induced swelling,the imbibition mechanism of CO2 in coal was studied.Coal is a complex material; and the mechanism of CO2 imbibition in coal involves not only adsorption but also “dissolution.In this study,the selected coal was extracted by tetrahydrofuran (THF) to remove the small molecules.It was found that the small molecules that can be extracted by THF may dissolve certain amount of CO2,depending on pressure
