Primary Results of Dry Distiller’S Grains with Solubles Gasification in A 100kwth Steam-Oxygen Blown Circulating Fluidized Bed GasifieR
Biomass fuels as a renewable energy source can be converted to commercial products via either biological (e.g.fermentation,enzymatic hydrolysis) or thermo-chemical processes (e.g.combustion,pyrolysis and gasification).Biomass gasification is associated with different options for combination with various power generation systems using gas engines, gas turbines and fuel cells and thus can enhance power generation efficiency.Gasification using various types of biomass such as woody, sugarcane residue, rice hull, pine sawdust, almond shells, wheat straw and food waste have been extensively reported in literature.DDGS (Dry Distillersgrains with Solubles) is a by-product of the dry-grind process to produce ethanol from cereals which currently is mainly fed to cattle. With the growth of the ethanol industry, the increasing supply of DDGS may saturate the livestock feed market thus other useful applications are required. Therefore, the potential use of DDGS as a biomass feedstock for gasification to produce gaseous fuel is investigated in this paper. The objective of this study is to examine the effects of process parameters (steam tobio mass ratio (SBR),oxygen to biomass stoichiometric ratio (ER),gasification temperature) and different bed materials on the composition distribution of product gas.Gasification experiment s have been carried out using an atmospheric pressure 100kWth steam-oxygen blown circulating fluidized bed gasifier (CFBG) which mainly consists of a riser, downcomer, cyclone separator and high temperature filter unit.Due to the high sulphur content in DDGS fuel, the main sulphur species (H2S and COS) behavior during gasification has been also studied.Preliminary data shows that the obtained raw product gas consists mainly of H2 (~17 %),CO2 (~30 %),CO (~23 %) and CH4 (~8.5 %) and it contains small amounts of H2S (~2300 ppmv),COS (~200 ppmv) and methyl mercaptan on a N2 free basis.A severe agglomeration phenomenon was observed during the experiment without adding additive due to the high potassium content in combination with chlorine in the fuel
