Effect of Coal Fly Ash Additive on Sulfur Retention of Coal Briquette
SO2 from the emissions of coal combustion is one of the major air pollutants and many techniques have been developed or are under investigation to effectively and economically remove them.Clean coal briquette is one of the most effective techniques because of the addition of sulfur-retention agent in coal briquette making it can fix sulfur in coal residuals during coal combustion. The sulfur-retention agents developed at present are calcium-based mainly, such as calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide. The products produced from the reactions of sulfur in coal and sulfur-retention agents during coal briquette combustion, however, are thermolabile at temperatures of >800 oC,which caused the rates of sulfur retention is very low and thus limit the further application of coal briquette.Coal fly ash contains the components, such as SiO2,Al2O3,Fe2O3 and alkali and alkali earth metal oxides, which maybe favor the productions of more stable sulfate species. The behaviors and mechanisms of coal fly ash affect on sulfur retention have been discussed in this article. The results show that: (1) Compared with the original fly ash, activated fly ash increase the sulfur retention rate of coal briquette effectively.(2) Activated fly ash react with sulfur in coal into high thermostable compounds Ca5(SiO4)2SO4 during coal briquette combustion which restrain the decomposition of sulfate species
