An Experimental Study on the Performance of Novel Iron-based Sorbents Supported on Lignite Chars during Sulfidation at High Temperatures

This paper studies the performance of novel iron-based sorbents supported on lignite chars during desulfurization of hot coal gases.Novel iron-based sorbents were prepared by using chars from steam gasification of Chinese lignite as the sorbent supporter.Iron oxide was used as the active component.The performance of the char-supported sorbents was investigated using a fixed-bed quartz reactor in the temperature range of 673K to 873K.Simulated coal gas containing 0.46% H2S enters the reactor with a space velocity of 1000 hr-1.The product gases were analyzed using a GC equipped with a TCD and a FPD detector.The results showed that lignite char supported iron-based sorbents have high reactivity during hot coal gas desulfurization.Lignite char itself was found to have very limited capacity of adsorbing H2S in the temperature range tested.The sorbent samples before and after sulfidation were examined using SEM and XRD through which the active components in the sorbents were identified.The high dispersion of the active components in the activated char matrix contributed to the high reactivity of the sorbents during sulfidation
