Real Time Studies of Pd/γ-Al2O3 Sorbents for the Removal of Trace Contaminants from Coal-Derived Fuel Gas

The Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) is a promising technology for the use of coal in a clean and efficient manner. In order to maintain the overall efficiency of the IGCC process,it is necessary to clean the fuel gas of contaminants at warm to hot temperatures.Trace elements are of particular environmental concern, and thermodynamic studies have indicated that Hg (as elemental Hg),Se (as hydrogen selenide,H2Se),As (as arsine,AsH3),and P (as phosphine,PH3) will be present as gaseous species. This research focuses on the removal of volatilized trace contaminants using a Pd/γ-Al2O3 sorbent under a variety of relevant conditions.Breakthrough curves for each of the contaminants were developed on 20 wt% Pd/Al2O3 to demonstrate complete removal, and on 2 wt% Pd/Al2O3,to determine breakthrough times, using near real-time analysis of removal via a commercial GC/ion-trap MS system. The influence of multiple contaminants was explored by generating breakthrough curves with multiple contaminants present.Thermal regeneration of the used 2 wt% Pd/Al2O3 sorbents at 550℃ was also studied, with the observation that H2Se does desorb from the sorbent, although experimental limitations prevented thorough testing
