Performance Evaluation of Power Saving Mechanism in IEEE 802.16e Wireless MANs with Duplex Links

One of the most important ways for extending the battery lifetime of Mobile Stations in the wireless Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) is to conserve the power consumption effectively. A sleep mode is offered in IEEE 802.16e. Only when both the uplink and downlink are idle when Power Saving Class type III is using, the system will be in a sleep state and the energy will be saved. Regarding the uplink as one server and the downlink as another server, the sleep state and the listening state as two di.erent vacation periods,a queueing model with synchronous multiple vacations is built in this paper. By using the method of a semi-Markov process, the average response times for the duplex traffics and the system power saving ratio are given. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate and validate the influence of the system parameters on the system performance.
